The Hellenic Society of System Studies’ 12th. annual National & International Conference will be held in Piraeus, Greece from 15 to 16, 2016, in collaboration with and under the auspices of Department of Informatics, University of Piraeus, Greece. The theme of the Conference, is Professional Systemics and Stakeholder Engagement, with applications in both public and private sector organizations, across a wide spectrum of service and production industries.
It is an axiomatic tenet today that organizations operate in complex environments that change frequently due to social-cultural, legal, economic, political, environmental, ethical, demographic, and technological influences. Indeed, increasing uncertainty seem to be the only constants in our turbulent world. This uncertainty is in part a result of the pluralistic differences in people’s perception of reality, the varied believes, attitudes, and values that drive their complex motivations, and issues associated with culture, politics, and power structures. Systems theory proposes that systems are open to and interact with their environment in the form of a continual exchange of matter, energy, and information. This exchange is realized through the system’s boundary, which is the spatial, temporal, and/or conceptual boarder that separates the system’s interdependent elements from the environment. The system’s environment in turn, is composed of those elements and their properties that are not a part of the system but which nevertheless have an impact on the state of the system. Professional Systemics bridges the gap between theory and practice and promotes the use of effective Methodologies and Multi-Methodologies in managing meaningful stakeholder engagement.
Stakeholder engagement is an umbrella term encompassing a range of activities through which an organization involves persons or groups who may be directly or indirectly affected by the decisions it makes and/or influence the outcome of its decisions, either positively or negatively. Stakeholders include business partners, customers, suppliers, national or local government bodies, civil societies, special interest groups, affected communities, and others. Organizations that actively engage their stakeholders gain valuable insight into the various issues that motivate their behavior, and align their business practices with their stakeholders’ needs and expectations, thus driving long-term equity and sustainability.
A systems approach allows the organization to successfully apply a holistic approach for the purpose of engaging in a meaningful dialogue with its stakeholders in order to achieve a level of effective operation through fact-based decision-making, which in turn gives the organization awareness of the long term consequences of its actions (actions taken or avoided). Further, through a systems approach, the policy-maker is in a better position to redefine the issues at hand, rather than apply modifications of older solutions which may have been employed in the past.
The fields of theoretical and applied research that will be addressed by the conference include but are not limited to the following:• Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability • Risk Management & Business Continuity • Crisis Management • Negotiation & Conflict Management • Media Relations • Public Affairs, Lobbying • Compliance Management • Marketing/Brand and Consumer Communication • Market Development • Social Medial Engagement • Customer Relations Management • Supplier Management • Human Resource Management • Grievance Management • Environmental Management • Project Management • Change Management • Knowledge Management • Information Management

Chairs: Nikitas Assimakopoulos and Dimitrios Varsos, University of Piraeus, Department of Informatics, Piraeus, Greece

Call for papers and invited papers

The Symposium’s aim is to stimulate an energetic exchange of systems approach perspectives in the area of Professional Systemics applied effectively in organizations and enterprises across a wide spectrum of both service and production industry sectors.

The traditional organization is designed along a hierarchical structure in which activities are organized along common areas of responsibility. Key processes are defined and controlled within strict functional boundaries, with minimum attention given to systemic interaction. Business decisions are derived through analytical methods which involve the determination of the meaning of what is studied in the context of a reductionist approach: reducing the whole into its constituent elements, understanding each element separately and aggregating understanding of the individual elements into an understanding of the whole. Given the dynamic complexity of the today’s business environment and the continual exchange of its constituent elements, application of the reductionist method typically results in the loss of the essential properties of both the system studied as well as of its parts. Hence, business decisions lack cohesion, and management, the ability to align activities to effectively achieve the company’s long-term strategic objectives.

Systems thinking is fundamentally different from the reductionist method in that it focuses on the understanding of how and why various elements affect one another within a defined unified whole. A systemic approach concentrates on the understanding of the interactions of the constituent elements of a system that produce a behavior rather than the segregated parts of the system, studied in isolation. The need for a systemic approach has never been more imperative, given the realities of the new economic climate impelled by the current credit crisis and the need for organizations to challenge existing paradigms, core values and business assumptions against the dynamic complexity of a volatile economic environment.

Professional Systemics is the practical application of systems thinking to everyday situations. It is a means through which to handle complexity in a manner which has achievable, measurable and realistic results.

Professional Systemics bridges the gap between theory and practice and promotes the use of effective systemic Methodologies and Multi-Methodologies in managing today’s dynamic organizational complexity.
